Social movements oppose attacks on indigenous people in Mato Grosso do Sul

The criminalization and killing of Indigenous People in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sul has only increased in the last years, as international agribusiness continues to expand in the Central Plateau, Pantanal and Amazonian regions.

The award was last given in 2009, in celebration of the MST's 25th anniversary. Now the landless share the award again to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Movement, completed in 2014.
Seventeen years have passed since that fateful April 17. On that day in 1996, a march of rural workers organized by the MST was blockaded and attacked by military police in the city of Eldorado dos Carajás, Pará state. 19 people were killed on the spot and 2 others died days afterwards. The day of the Eldorado dos Carajás massacre has officially become the National Day of Struggle for Land Reform.
