Social movements oppose attacks on indigenous people in Mato Grosso do Sul

The criminalization and killing of Indigenous People in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sul has only increased in the last years, as international agribusiness continues to expand in the Central Plateau, Pantanal and Amazonian regions.

The MST awards the “Struggle for Land” Prize to 22 fighters

More than 600 people attended the award ceremony, which on significant dates is conferred on people who stood out in defense of Struggle for Land Recipientspeasant struggles, agrarian reform, and a socialist society. The “Struggle for Land” Prize was awarded on January 24, 2015 at the Florestan Fernandes National School in Guararema (SP).  The award was last given in 2009, in celebration of the MST's 25th anniversary. Now the landless share the award again to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Movement, completed in 2014.

In a meeting with Julian Assange, the MST establishes a partnership with Wikileaks

Every day in front of the Embassy of Ecuador in London, a group of five people meet for a protest. With some posters and a hand-sewn banner, they are demanding the release of Wikileaks found Julian Assange who is confined in the building. "We are organizing a big action on June 19, can you participate?" they ask passersby. The Embassy is located in a tourist area of the city, right next to a large department store and the protest draws lots of attention.

Seventeen years after the massacre, the attack on land reform continues

drawing of massacreSeventeen years have passed since that fateful April 17. On that day in 1996, a march of rural workers organized by the MST was blockaded and attacked by military police in the city of Eldorado dos Carajás, Pará state. 19 people were killed on the spot and 2 others died days afterwards. The day of the Eldorado dos Carajás massacre has officially become the National Day of Struggle for Land Reform.
